The Indian Creek High school junior varsity and varity football teams begin their seasons this Friday, August 16, at Greensburg High School. Both teams are looking to start the season off strong with excellent performances. No score will be kept, but you might as well with these two teams going at it once again. For those of you who do not remember, Greensburg defeated Indian Creek in the sectional championship this past season. There is no doubt there will be tension in the atmosphere as the Braves and Pirates match up to begin their seasons.
Indian Creek is led on offense by returning starters Brenden Smith and Dokken Egenolf. Smith, an All-State wide receiver, is looking to do something special as he begins his senior season. Junior Dokken Egenolf looks to get things going on the ground game this year behind two returning starters on the offensive line, Braxton Zachary and Tyler Hamilton, both juniors. Senior Colton Snodgrass looks to head up the offensive line at the center position. Rounding out the offense includes seniors Cory Utecht at the other wide out position; while Dylan Walker, Justin Cochran, and Austin Wethington rotate at the H-Back postion. Nick Clevenger and Cory Scheetz will control the other side of the line as newcomers to the starting lineup. Ethan Whitaker, last year’s JV QB moves to the Varsity starting lineup this year as the 4th Wide Receiver position. The team will start the season rotation two players at the quarterback postion. Sophomore Gynson Robley and junior Nic Brown, a transfer from Edgewood, will be sharing reps as the season progresses.
The Braves’ defense looks to control the scoreboard this year. Senior Justin Cochran and Cory Scheetz will start at the defensive end positions along with sophomore Hunter Pottorff getting into the mix. Tackles will include Nick Clevenger and returning starter Wes Cornett. The linebacker positions will include Dyson Heminger, Elijah Manness, and Nick Mathis rotating at middle backers. Wethington and Egenolf will play outside along with Dylan Walker getting in the game. Defensive Backs will include Jimmy Starks, Cory Utecht, and Brenden Smith. Kicking duties will be held by Dylan Walker and Brenden Smith punting.
Friday’s scrimmage will consist of the varsity going fifteen plays on each side of the ball and the JV going twelve. There will be a brief special teams session with no contact, then another round of plays on each side of the football. Officials will be making necessary penalty calls during the scrimmage, as it still is a controlled game. This scrimmage is a good chance for the team to see where they are as a team and make changes as necessary. Look for the team to keep things simple in the scrimmage, but anything can happen. The Braves begin their quest for another sectional finals appearance, this year with a different outcome.
Good luck to both the Braves and the Pirates as they begin this year’s season. Make sure you come and support your Braves. Go Creek!
